2010 Season
Note for your diaries
Round 8 - 27 June 2010 will be this season's 'Donation Round' for our Remote Community Programme. Please start collecting any second hand sporting equipment from the dark corners of the garage and cupboards for the team donation boxes. With most teams playing at home it will be a great opportunity, weather permitting, to have a full day of Junior Football at the Oval and introduce the Auskick players to the thrills of Junior Football at the Club. More details will be coming out soon.
14s Match Reports
Magpies 14's vs West Coast 30 May
A disappointing result from the grand final replay yesterday but also a reality check of how hard we will have to try to match the efforts of a very good opposition in West Coast who outplayed us in most areas with a very good performance. Although physically stronger across the board in comparison to our boys they also showed a real desire for the whole game to attack the ball with real determination. However, it should be acknowledged our boys did show the capacity to match them and we were genuinely still in the game at each of the 3 intervals.
As a team we will discuss the match and where we want to set our goals personally and as a team for this year. One thing we need to reinforce is to not criticise a team mate's performance on the ground nor engage with opposition players and supporters on the sideline. Whilst we are a team that has enjoyed success, it's also how you cop a loss and respond when things aren't going our way that reflects on our character and sportsmanship.
Good performances yesterday included Sam Shackles who led the backline when it was inundated at times and managed to quieten down the very talented opponent he played against. Well done also to Jeremy Andrew who played his role very well all day again on good opponents. Jack Dowland continued his good form making himself available as the key link man in the team. Ben Paganin’s courage was great example to his team mates and Nic Banks again showed the value of confidence and belief to back himself against the opposition.
We have a bye this week for the long weekend, however we will be training. Could boys bring runners and a jumper/towel in case we go to down to the beach for part of the session.
The following week have Kingsley at Kingsley Oval 11.30 am - a good game to bounce back to.
Cottesloe 14s v Sorrento Duncraig Hawks - 23rd May 2010
A very solid performance by the Magpies against Sorrento Duncraig Hawks winning 12.12 (80) to 4.6 (34). Despite some heavy flooding tactics by the opposition (Under 14s footy??) the boys played smart and stuck to our game plan very well in the challenging conditions. It was most pleasing to see them become aware of the importance of using the attacking side of the ground wherever possible. Some of the transfer from the backline was of a very high standard and showed the team's trust in each other and good decision making.
If only Jezza Andrew had held that mark "we could have walked away having seen something that surpassed Jesaulenko or Gerovich". However we can say we saw a leap at least comparable to those feats and "Jezza Andrew you beauty" does have a ring to it. Jeremy had a terrific game all round and it was tremendous to see him back to his best. Also good to see Adrian McKenna working his way back to the "Agee" of old, a very skilled and balanced player with excellent vision. Jack Birchmore’s effort also worthy of mention as he attacked the ball with conviction and showed some of those mercurial evasion skills that was a feature of his game last year.
Glad to see Youngy get some good touch and running the ball with confidence out of the backline. Congratulation to Ben and Luke Pago on their 50 game recognition and they continued to play as they have always done - knowing no other way but to play it hard. Also good to see Harry getting some good contested touches in amongst the action zone and rewarded with some effective contributions into the forward line. Very comforting having Sam Shackles back in the side his presence really bolsters an already tough backline and well done to Tom Stewart on his first game for the 14's of 2010. Looking forward to Tom being a big part of the team.
A real challenge for us this week the Grand Final replay against West Coast. Sure to be a great game and worthy of a good crowd so let your friends and family know. We will need to be at our best physically and mentally on Sunday and as we know our best effort will give us a great opportunity to get a win. We are at Cottesloe Oval 1.15pm. This week we will be recognising Harry and Jack D's 50 game achievement.
Cottesloe 14 vs Marist - 16 May 2010
Congratulations boys on a good solid 4 quarter effort yesterday and in particular the way some of you Matt Grice and Birchy had to adapt to unfamiliar positions. Something which is going to occur throughout the season and very much part of what modern football is all about (for good/bad or otherwise). Yes the days of the full forward week in week out being ensconced on his favourite lounge chair in the goal square with slippers, dressing gown, cognac and cigar have passed by and with them the nostalgic sight of Graham Dowland.
Speaking of which, whilst an impressive performance on the flags with some excellent positioning, Graham neglected in his primary responsibility of supplying the oranges (which I believe from previous correspondence were being air freighted from Valencia). Please blog your suggestions of appropriate consequence for GD as it could have been dire.
Special mentions yesterday to Nic Banks who is enjoying a great year and Matt Cairns with his presence at full forward after half time. Great to see Jeremy Andrew and Hugo also stick up for their team mates and close checking. Adrian Flexman really hit his straps after half time and Jack Prendy fired the boys up really well with some penetrating and courageous efforts. Our recruits in Wes, Mike Mayall and Ben continued to show what great assets they are to the team. Jack Dowland also continued his great form and is on line to soon have a wing named after him if he continues with the way he is playing. Good to see Adrian McKenna show us some run and hopefully getting over his injuries. Frazer "the Hoover" Gerrard just kept cleaning up everywhere he went and his sense of place and space is a joy to watch. Nice to see Harry getting over his broken toe and getting some good close in contested touches.
Dan Barnes who umpired the game is the Claremont District Development Manager and offered the following feedback about out performance.
"Thanks, enjoyed umpiring your team yesterday. Basically I thought you guys played some good team football, the difference between the two sides (and Marist are a pretty good side) was that you guys committed your bodies and attacked the ball a lot better and importantly decision making and skill execution was better."
We've started the season well but nothing to get carried with and line up against Sorrento Duncraig Hawks at Percy Doyle Reserve this Sunday 11.30 am.
This week we will be acknowledging the 50 game milestone of foundation team members Ben and Luke Paganin. We started this practice last week with Jack Prendiville and Hugo Timms and family and friends are welcome to the changeroom inner sanctum pre-game to see the boys presented with their trophy.
FYI if you want to follow the results and ladder it is available here.
There is also an iPhone app (of course). Click here.

2009 Season
13s take off the Flag!
On a great day for the Club last Sunday in front of a big crowd, the 13s defeated West Coast Red to win the premiership.
Well done to Brad and his coaching group of Tim, Lyle and David and manager, Justin on a very rewarding season for all the players, parents and friends. It was a particularly tough challenge for the coaching group given that, 9 weeks ago after a string of losses, the team had to win 9 games in a row to get to where they did.
Thanks to many of you who came along last Sunday to support which was very much appreciated by the 13s and, to Club patron, Brian Sierakowski who delivered an inspiring speech to the players after training last Thursday in the change rooms. The parents were also ready to pull on their footy boots there and then !
After the school holidays I will test the waters to check if an interest remains to get together at The Albion for a quick post season C/ee meeting to work out tasks for next season followed by a dinner.
Thanks to everyone for all your volunteer efforts in making it a most enjoyable season for everyone at our Club which has placed it in a very healthy shape. All the best for a well deserved summer break. See photo

Cottesloe 14s vs. Scarborough
Before playing our third game of football in a week, the boys came to the ground with a change of attitude. The before game preparation was intensive and switched on. This resulted in Cott having the ability to kick away in the first half against the undefeated Scarborough side. Great defensive work along with clever use of the football provided Cottesloe with a chance of upsetting a side that has dominated the competition this season. Amongst the team, Jaffa, Fordy, Stewie, and Loch gave us inspiration with their hard running, physical presence, and efficient execution. Scarborough were always going to hit back hard after half time and the challenge was for Cottesloe to stem their momentum. Unfortunately, Scarboroughs momentum was too strong and we were quickly overrun. With no interchange and 2 of our players just about on one leg, the boys should be proud of their hard running and desire to obtain the football. With one game to go, a bottom of the table clash against Warwick-Greenwood, has developed into a must win game so we can finish the season on a good note.

Cottesloe 14s vs. North Beach
Wednesday night saw Cottesloe take on North Beach under lights at the showgrounds. Many thanks must go to Brad Girdwood and Dan Barnes for organising another great opportunity to play under different conditions. With both teams crippled with absentees, the majority of the game was played with 16-a-side football. In the first quarter, we were not able to capitalize on a five goal breeze which cost us severely. North Beach, not only stronger bodied and more skilful around the ground, gave Cottesloe a lesson on how to play defensive football. The fact that we didn’t we man up on our opponents and how we were constantly second to the contest, resulted in an unhealthy defeat by the end of the game. Johnny Klyden provided glimmers of hope with four goals and silky skills through the centre, whilst Jaffa and Langers tried hard all day.

Cottesloe 14’s vs. Kingsley Cats
Last Sunday spectators were fortunate enough to watch a very tightly fought game of football. Cottesloe coming into the game with nothing to lose and Kingsley fighting for top spot made for a very close encounter. After much deliberation, it was decided to put “Mr Versatile” Matty Kelly up at full forward. The big man didn’t disappoint with especially sticky dukes and gun barrel straight kicking, helped by great delivery, gave the team and a fresh air of confidence with 2 early goals. At quarter time the game was all square, yet it seemed as if Cott were a little off the pace. The second quarter was not one of Cott’s best as loose manning up and constantly being second to the ball hurting us badly as Kingsley, with a few of their bigger boys, kicking away to a half time lead. After an uncanny rocket at half time from the coach, Cott came out guns blazing and dominated the third with Neon Leon, Macca, and Fordy dominating. Unfortunately wayward kicking in front of goals and the inside 50 delivery efficiency at a low, Kingsley piled on a few goals to be a considerable margin ahead at three quarter time. However, in the fourth quarter Kingsley decided to take their foot of the pedal a little too early which Cott took advantage of and kicked 3 quick goals to bring the game well within reach. Exciting goals from Marcus Coli and the Wiz Johnny Klyden provided much spirit and entertainment. The boys battled hard all fourth quarter but unfortunately Kingsley were able to hold the game up and maintain the lead. Credit must go to Kingsley as their size and skill were at time unmatchable and their determination to win the hard ball was second to none. Unfortunately, it was again a slow start that let us down but with a game this Wednesday night against North Beach and next Sunday, we should be footy mad and ready to go from the opening bounce. See you there.

Cottesloe 11s vs Claremont, College Park
Paw of the Tiger
The Magpies tangled with the Tigers, playing 18 on the ground which with a wet ball made for a messy cloud of fur and feathers. The opposition hit hard, denying possession, smothering disposals and turning the ball over in tussles. Individual brilliance flashed on both sides but for the first half the Magpies were playing catchup with the quick passages of play from the other side.
In the second half our team showed a renewed vigour and the contest tightened but time after time the hard working Cottesloe midfielders were overwhelmed by Opposition arriving in numbers (see picture). We fought the ball to the forward line time after time only to face a gruelling campaign to get clear air for a snap at goal in the face of stiff defence. As the game wore on the Magpies often had the better of possession but the home team would not let up and we learnt a valuable lesson in expansive play and wide leads, with consolidation needed in the areas of backing up with shepherding and bumping. The hard work and stamina of the Cottesloe team, right to the final whistle, were nevertheless an inspiration.
Sunday 2nd August 2009
Cottesloe 14s vs. Carine 14s Jaguars
Round 12 saw Cottesloe play a skillfull and tall Carine side. The sun was shining, we had a near full team and it was looking like a great day. Carine started the game with four unanswered goals as a result of Cottesloe being second to the ball. Unfortunately, this early game dominance seemed to come back to haunt us, as for the next three quaters, the young magpies had a dominant controll over the game. Kicking and desicion making will play a huge part in this Thursdays training as it was poor against a very skillfull Carine side. With inaccurate kicking in front of goal and in general play, Carine were able to maintain the lead and win the match. Credit where credits due to the boys, as they displayed a relentless attack on the footy for the last three quaters, which saw 80% of all contests won by us. This is a direct result of hard running. Hard running is incredibly hard to learn and I commend all the 14s for displaying such a mature and required skill. Our new full back, Kaido, AKA Brian Lake (Western Bulldogs) had a sensational game especially after hitting the training track with intensity and purpose. This is a great example of training how you play and therefore playing well by training well. A special mention must also go to Ed the Horse as he was appointed the captain for the day and didn't disappoint. He was rock solid in defence and displayed maturity well above his age in his disposal and decision making. Next week is a must win game against Kingsley at Cottesloe and therefore I urge ALL the 14s to attend training.

Cottesloe 11s vs Subiaco
Due to good player numbers on the other side (a welcome change from lending our players in previous weeks), we played 17 a side for this game. The Dream Team, so dubbed because of their consistent asleep-at- the-wheel first quarter form during the season, snapped out of their slumber earlier than usual on Sunday when challenged by a couple of early goals from the Subiaco side. Subi had come to win and hit the ground running, showing plenty of individual flair and well-calculated passages of play early. The Magpies awoke during the quarter and began matching the endeavour of the Subi side, though the unaccustomed high population on the ground meant a lot of scrabbling on the ground in large packs with a wet ball in the first half. The entertainment was polished off with Paul Henharen's rather unique interpretation of Goal Umpiring showboating which threatened to eclipse the efforts of the footballers.
Cottesloe steadily got to grips with the play and were soon controlling most of the taps, individual flashes of brilliance eventually pegging back the visitors. In the latter stages the bigger boys from Subi were showing signs of flagging but the Magpies were just getting started. Our side rose to the contest and found plenty of
energy with the extra benefit of a large bench. At the end of the game, though no scores are officially kept and both sides were claiming victory, it was a very tight tussle which went right to the wire. Both teams showed superb sportsmanship and probably both deserved to sing their victory songs, and then the real contest began,
with most spectators giving that particular contest to Cottesloe on volume alone. A great game against a fine opposition and all the players should be very proud.

Cottesloe 13s vs Wembley Downs
An exciting match for us all today running out winners by 10 points against a very good Wembley Downs side. Boys were sensational and showed us all what they can do when they put their minds to it. I'm sure the second quarter efforts will be one of the memories we take away from this year and breathtaking in parts. Great support as well from parents and friends. When we conider that 10 of the boys were at home with the flu during the week to get through the game was a credit to all of them. Hopefully we learnt a bit about stepping up when you might not be physically at your peak and that a team with determination like we had today can overcome sides who might be physically bigger and stronger.
Special mentions to Jeremy Notley for being such a focal point at full forward, Nick Banks, Stephen Howard, Matt Grice, Jack Dowland and Tom Cowcher (what about that spoil on the goal line) in the backline. Jack Prendy, Jeremy Andrew for their physical presence, Adrian McKenna, Frazer and Adrian Flexman for their run, Will Greenwood in rucking all day against very tall opposition, Luke Paganin in linking the play together so well, Josh for presenting an option and getting right in amongst action. Hugo for being such a creative option across the centre, Tom Golovoda showing his versatility in being switched from forward pocket to back pocket and playing like is 180cm. Ben Pago for being thrown around like a rag doll bit coming back for more every time, Harry for presenting a good forward option up the ground, Liam for his unselfish play and courage in the pocket and Sam Shackles for his strong bullocking performance in amongst the action. - Yes, I could have said a good team effort.

Cottesloe 13's vs North Beach JFC
A good result on the weekend against North Beach who stuck at it well for the whole game. 13.7 - 2.1 Pleasing performance by all boys and good to see the effort of being involved and prepared to take some hard knocks through being where the ball was or in a position where it had to be won (eg. Jeremy Andrews, Tom Cowcher, Harry, Josh, Ben Pago). Thanks to Jim Flexman for his medical triage. Special mentions Jack D, Stephen, Adrian Flexman and Hugo (good leadership). Exactly what we need to keep doing rather than rely on 3 or 4 to get us through. As we spoke about and agreed as a team at training - game time is rewarded through putting in as hard as you can.
Crucial game for us against Wembley Downs on Sunday - will be one of the teams we will be challenging for a place in the finals in the race to the end of year. Remember our focus though on best personal and team efforts.

Cottesloe 14's vs West Coast JFC
On a day where conditions were close to perfect, a hard fought football game was always on the cards. As both teams were on even points coming into the match, it was a simple case of which ever team wanted the football more would come away with the victory. After a great first quarter and solid half by the Cott Maggies, it looked like West Coast may have been on the ropes and ready to pack up and leave. Much to their credit, West Coast hung in there to provide a thrilling finish to the match. With both sides trading goal for goal, one team could not assert any dominance and run away with the match. The desperation and courage of the Cottesloe footballers was matched with hard running and clever decision making from West Coast. When the final siren blew, both teams had nothing left in the tank as West Coast came away with a one point win. As heart breaking and gut wrenching it is losing by a point the strong character, toughness, and sheer desperation to win the hard ball that the Cottesloe boys displayed was an inspiration to any spectator watching. With a tough road to the finals from this point, I must encourage all boys to come down to training with a purposeful mentality. Thankyou once again to all the parents that helped out and we hope to see you down there supporting your sons for the game this week.

Magpie 10’s vs Swanbourne
The local derby of the 10’s. Playing to the Magpie strengths, a larger oval was selected with co captain Ben Avery winning the toss and kicking with the breeze. All strategies worked! Although both sides were down on numbers, the 14 man a side teams had lots of space – the Magpies who are used to running together soon realised this was to their advantage. Congratulations to Jack Field, Abe Forward, Rigby Dowland & Mike Boyatzis who each did a quarter stint playing for Swanbourne. The Magpie 10’s continue their development as a team and whilst dominating the game, each player continued to play unselfish football – always looking for someone to pass either by hand or foot, playing their position, not all streaming into the forward line to score goals – these are the hallmarks of a team. Coaches, parents and onlookers were very impressed with the style of the Cott tens – long may it last. Great team effort with contributors everywhere; Josh King was taking marks and delivering good ball, Luka Finn was in the action, Seb Evans & Rigby were dangerous, Mike Boyatzis and Oly Girdwood controlled the back line, Tom Williams, Ben Edwards and Abe Forward both were consistent contributors.
A well deserved week off before the next game!

13's Match Report
A much better effort by the team on Sunday and an example of when we all apply the best effort we can that the Mighty Magpies are able to match it with the best of opponents. An even game to half time but West Coast Red getting the better of us in the second half 7.12 (54) to 4.3 (27).
Fantastic game by Adrian Flexman in breaking the lines with his pace and timing
and excellent delivery. Also good to see Luke and Ben Paganin back to their desperate best playing the footy they have been known for over the last few years. Sam Shackles played an excellent game against easily the physically biggest boy in the competition and showed great courage to not be intimidated or put off task. Tom Cowcher's sure decision making and focus in the back pocket on a really tough day was also merit. The forward movements of Harry Goodlet and Frazer Gerrard were very encouraging and it was good to see Josh Evans getting some sure touches. The effort of Matthew Grice in taking on rucking duties against tall opponents is also worthy of mention.
The last 3 weeks have been a big reality check for coaches, players and I dare say parents alike. We have played probably the 3 other better sides in the competition and unfortunately come up empty handed. An evaluation by the coaching panel concludes we are able to match each of those sides when applying ourselves phyically and mentally to the game on the day.
The second half of the season leaves us with no room for complacency or a poor game to reach our goal of playing in the finals. It is a goal which is achievable if we apply the same mindset that we showed for most of yesterday and which we talked about at training last week.

Magpies 10's vs Wembley White
Weather report – Windy!
At Empire Ave reserve the wind was up but so were the tremendously talented magpie 10’s. In fact they played fantastic team football and displayed skills and teamwork as if it were just a ‘normal’ wether day!
Capt for the day, birthday boy, Riggers Dowland, set it up by winning the toss and sensing the boys were switched on, decided to kick into the breeze for the first quarter – it worked a treat. The boys outscored the opposition in the first quarter. Thinking the breeze would do the work, the boys didn’t seal the game in the second quarter, but worked really hard in the 3rd setting up a comfortable outscoring 4th quarter.
Tom Williams had an outstanding game, particularly playing the sweeper of the back flank and even when he played for the opposition for a quarter – it’s not often that you get in the best for both teams in the same match!
Co capt Abe forward was dangerous around the packs as was Josh Allen & Jack Seah who are both becoming regular contributors. Our big men Ollie Girdwood and Mike Boyatsis also had a good day at the office. Overall, the team continues to play team football and are always looking to hand ball or deliver the ball to a team mate. Gone are the long bombs to no one. It is a pleasure to see the side bonding into a team playing side.

Magpies 11s vs Dalkeith-Nedlands at Melvista
11’s Dream Team, so named for their previous lack lustre and dreamy first 1st quarters, were roused from their slumber by a pre-game address from assistant coach John Currall. From the first ball-up the Cottesloe team were ready and eager for the contest. Our defensive unit, with great skill, teamwork and determination, managed to hold Dalkeith-Nedlands scoreless in the first quarter. Our midfielders Josh, Alister, Jack L.and Griff, dominated the contested possession through the centre and consistently fed the ball deep into our forward line where Issy “Golden Boot” Grist and Tristan “Up there Cazaly” King, capped the team’s effort of with fine goals. Skills from both teams improved greatly as the chilly air and moisture gave way to near perfect conditions, allowing a small but vocal group of proud parent’s to marvel at the player’s skills. Special mention for Denver “Ball Magnet" Young and Jack “lil’ Ripper” Henharen, both playing their best games for the season and really having an impact for the team. Big thank you to Hugo and Harrison ( and parent’s of course ) for helping us out when needed them….great effort guys.

Magpies 12's Match Report
The Magpie 12's played away this week against Wembley at Henderson Park. The boys kicked into a strong breeze for the first quarter and played very well outscoring our opponents 3 goals to 1. Reece Grant was full forward for most of the game and kicked 7 goals in an outstanding performance. Also in dazzling form was Alex Brogan who had a number of big runs complete with side-steps and dummies. He had a blinder creating havoc through the midfield. In the end we ran over Wembley by more than 14 goals in an excellent display of strength and finesse. Other notable mentions were Marcus Roberts in the ruck and a tackle by Gus Stewart.

13's Match Report
Swanbourne 9.3 (57) vs Cottesloe 6.7 (43)
Back to Earth with a bang on Sunday with the 13's suffering its first defeat for the season. Swannie turned up well and truly primed to have a good go at us and deserved the win. We need to be prepared to respond to good teams like them teams like them especially if we want to consider ourselves to be one of the better teams in the competition. However, there were some positives given we didn't play a really consistent game and had we kicked straighter could have stolen the game. Jack Prendiville despite being mauled by three or four Swannie Tigers every time he went for the ball was amazing. Jack Birchmore played a great back up role to Matt Cairns and Nic Banks showed his versatility in both the backline and when moved forward. Great to see Jack Dowland having a a big influence on the game. Liam Lannigan's endeavours were terrific and Stephen Howards marking and skills great to watch.

12s
Recently back from the Melbourne trip (you may have been following our tour in the press), the Magpie 12's played Swanbourne Navy at home last Sunday. Albeit a little rusty in the first half, the team held a 3 goal lead at half time and pressed on to win by 30 points. The boys were solid without being overly impressive but there were some standout performances from Harry Shepherd and James Simpson. Both boys took some hard knocks but kept up the pressure by kicking some handy goals in the last quarter. We also had solid games from Reece Grant, Pete Willis and Evan Ledger.
For the record, the boys also won their game against their Melbourne rival - Beaumaris. Despite the "Melbourne scourge", the boys had a great trip afte watching the WCE vs. Carlton on Friday night, played Beaumaris on Saturday and played half time at the MCG on Sunday.
Thanks to all involved with the trip.

Cottesloe 11's vs Claremont
The scourge of the East, Swine Flu, meant a change to the normal training routine where instead of ball skills and suicide runs at Harvey Field, the order of the day was electronic games on the couch. While this undoubtedly improved reflexes it made for a sluggish start to the first quarter on Sunday when the obviously flu free Claremont midfielders crashed into our backline and stunned them with a flurry of goals in quick succession. The shellshocked 'Pies struggled with the slippery ball and it was a desperate scramble to get something on the board before the end of the quarter, which did not come a moment too soon.
During the second quarter the hard hitting pace of the boys from the East did not slacken. However the Magpies were warmed up and individual bursts of brilliance started appearing like the first puffs of popcorn. Tristan's hands over the pack helped control things down the centre, Lachie denied them a free run on the wing, Isabelle was most often to be found under the pack ripping the ball out, Will, Marshall and Haz turned defence into attack time and again. It was all George could do to get boot to ball to snap a 2m goal and almost repeated the feat a minute later. Hamish was lucky to get away with a crunching no-arm tackle learnt from the Other Code. Tom proved the big men really could fly when he sailed over the midfield as if on a flying fox to snatch a mark. Everyone rose to the need of the team and didn't let the intensity drop until the end.
A solid performance which improved each quarter and the final result didn't reflect the run of play in the latter stages, the song was not sung but hard lessons were learned which will no doubt produce a blitzkrieg start to the next match. Well done all and a big thanks to our coterie of emergency Umpires who did a great job.

Magpie 10s vs West Coast
It is with a heavy heart I write this report. The Magpie 10’s for the first time in their playing careers met a side that challenged them for all four quarters. Playing at Harvey oval in beautiful winter conditions, the Magpie tens were confident running on to the ground. This was heightened when the opposition were short on numbers, even borrowing some of the Cott 9’s (who played very well !) to play for West Coast until the surf died down and the remainder of the West Coast team turned up for the second half.
A great game of football between two evenly matched teams. Pressure was on the Magpie backline which is something we have not been used to! Co captain Hunter Robson lived up to his name and hunted the ball regularly & had a great game. As did his co captain Bill Samual Staude. A physical encounter all day as the umpires swallowed their whistle and the boys just played footy. Clashes a plenty as Tom Williams will testify after being ridden into the ground and then have the opposition sit on his neck! Seb Evans, back from quarantine, was dangerous in the forward line, but using ones forehead to smother is not a move to continue! Mike Boyatsis & Abe Forward were solid contributors.
Whilst the boys may been outscored, they will be better for the experience as disappointment increased when realising that the song could not be sung – they are just not used to such a quiet change room!

Magpie 10s vs North Beach
The cott tens headed north to Charles riley reserve. Weather great, oval wet, team sleepy during warm up! Burt as soon as the game started, the magpie tens fired up. Oly Girdwood out of the middle, to captain Josh King put early goals on. Tom Williams and other co captain Jack Field were busy in the forward line. The team was not distracted by the change in administration staff, with Neil Warburton doing a superb job as umpire, Scott Edwards as runner and Mick Seah and Peter Annear as the high pitched cheer squad!
The Cott players were very disciplined at playing their position and controlled the game for all four quarters. Everyone contributed and our team work continues to improve. Good players were Josh Allen (reminding me a lot of leCras in the forward line) and Ben Avery – both scoring multiple goals. Both Rigby Dowland & Ben Edwards were busy around the ground.

12s Match Report
The Cottesloe 12's played at home against our arch-rivals the Swanbourne Tigers Gold. We have always had excellent on-field battles and this was no exception. The game was played in beautiful conditions on Sunday morning in stark contrast to the foul weather of the previous few days.
We fielded a slightly depleted side with the Cottesloe Primary boys away and our stalwart Alex Brogan still side-lined with a broken finger. However these omissions were done proud by our new opening midfield of Charlie (Get out of my way) Benson, Pat (Silky) Keely and James (Don't argue)Simpson. We must have broken loose from the centre on 4 out of 5 occasions and the forward line was being bombarded. Sly work up forward by Brynn (In and under) O"Connor resulted in a couple of cheeky goals. The Grant boys were back to their very best with consistent hard ball gets and good hands.
Play of the day was Marcus Roberts leading from full forward to centre half forward and taking a great overhead mark and kicking a goal.
Overall we led throughout the game and at times our backline had to withstand relentless pressure from Swanny. We always kept a buffer of 3 goals but in the final quarter the boys broke loose and won out by 8 goals.

The Magpies - Tens
Scarborough travelled south on Sunday to Harvey oval to undertake the now very much talked about magpie 10's. We put on some beautiful weather and after a slow first quarter, then put on the goals.
This was a football lesson being dished out by the pies to the Scarborough surfers.
After a weeks absence from the coaching scene, coach Dowland was very impressed by the continued improvement of the 10's. "There is no limit to how good these guys can be" he was quoted as saying.
Hunter Robson showed some form as did Fraser Marzec who was forever burrowing under the packs - its no secret that Ashley Macintosh is his uncle!
The team was very ably led by co captains Tom Warburton and Seb Evans who both were busy when ever the ball came their way.
A convincing display by the 10's and we look forward to this weeks rest to be fresh for our away battle against Wembley in two weeks time.

Tens run Amok on Dalkeith Nedlands Fun Park
Early start at the Dalkeith - Nedlands home ground for the TTTT's made for some tired and sleepy parents. No such problems with the team as the boys looked as fresh as daisies although coaching staff without our winningest coach (G. Dowland) were clearly under the pump to maintain our undefeated streak.
Captains of the day Jack Annear and Michael Boyatsis won the toss and
elected to kick away from the rising sun (a new tactic). After an innitial struggle the Maggies asserted their dominance all over the ground with a strong opening quarter by Ben Lee, Ben Avery,Ollie Girdwood and Abe Forward. Second quarter kicking into the sun saw a goal avalanche with three from Tom May and great creative work by Seb Evans up front also.
Second half and with the game all but all over the Maggies swept all
before them. Tremendous tackling ,team work , creative handball and good leading in the open expanses of Dalkieth Nedlands (let's be honest - they never did like
the clinches) the boys ran all over the opposition. Special mention for all the boys great efforts in tackling( a skill we worked on this week).
Great four quarter efforts from Ben Edwards, Michael Boyatsis, Fraser Marzec and Tom Williams.
The team reallly have some great team work going and even the song
sounded better this week.
Augers well for next week.

Magpie Terrific Tens
“The Mothers Day Massacre”
Magpies ventured into the lion’s den at Subi on Mothers Day morning. The Magpie 10’s were bristling with enthusiasm after making their mothers breakfast in bed, doing the washing up and then preparing for their big game.
Ben Lee & Fraser Marzec co captained the team and what an inspiration they were. In the first half Ben was unstoppable. With Duo Oly & Ben Edwards also in the middle, a lot of ball was one and sent forward where Abe, Seb & the two Jacks (Field & Seah) made the most of it. Goals were raining for the Magpies. Second half much the same as we reshuffled the team. Ben Avery a leading forward snared a couple, Josh Allan got into the action as did Hunter playing his first season, and Riggers and Mike B had plenty of the ball. The tens teamwork is outstanding as they are forming into a running team who play on, handball and look to pass to a teammate. Overall the teamwork was too good for the lions whose roar became a whimper by the final siren. Unfortunately, the whimper was catching as the team song was not sung with gusto as some of the word were forgotten. The team is forgoing training for choir practise!

Cottesloe Magpies 10.8-68 vs West Coast 5.4-34
The 14’s “Juggernaut” has started to get its wheels rolling. After the boys had slaved away over the kitchen stove that morning cooking their mothers breakfast in bed, and out getting their knees dirty picking flowers in the garden, they started off with an absolute bang. Out scoring their opponents in the first quarter, with smart long kicking to the tall forwards. The boys, despite their great first quarter, became a complacent with their opponents, which led to West Coast outscoring the Maggies in the second and finishing 8 points ahead at half time. Credit where credit is due, the young guns pulled off a stellar third quarter and showed maturity way beyond their years to come home strongly and take the match and the crowd by storm. The boys displayed great football smarts and counteracted anything that the opposition threw at them which lead to a great convincing win. A fabulous team effort, with brilliant performances on show for their lucky mothers on the sidelines. Well done boys and its only up the ladder form here.

10s vs Mosman park Redbacks
Terrifyingly terrific & tremendously talented 10's match report.
First game of the year was a cracker. The magpie boys keen to hit the
park for their first outing as the TTTTT's.
Very ably led by the two captains for the day Ben Edwards and Jack Seah.
Magpies had control of the match through to half time. Strong performances in first half by Luka Finn, Tom Warburton, & Jack Seah. Following half time, the team suffered like the Eagles on the weekend, but unlike the Eagles, the TTTTT's fought back strongly in a cliff hanger of a game, that must have ended in a draw. The team play shown at certain stages by the Magpie 10's was outstanding and as the boys shake of the summer sand & salt water, they will continue to improve.
Great performances by Ben Edwards, Riggers Dowland, Jack Field and Michael.

11s vs Mosman Park
The 11’s opening game of the season against Mosman Park proved to be a very interesting and even tussle between the two sides until the final quarter, when the Redbacks managed to gain the advantage. Certainly in the second half, a number of Cottesloe players appeared to be leg weary from an arduous hockey carnival the previous day. For the first game of the season, there were some very encouraging signs and some fantastic passages of play especially from deep in our defence. A number of the Cottesloe players appeared to particularly enjoy this year’s full wrap-around tackling rule and displayed some eagerness in attacking the football. It was particularly pleasing to see such a large and vocal group of parents on the boundary line showing support for the players. Special thanks to our runner John Prior, who had to endure some interesting comments from some onlookers and goal umpire.

Nimble 9’s vs Marist Blue
It was down to the last game of the season for the impressive Nimble 9’s to continue their rapid improvement. Marist are always tough and the Blue team were on their guard early – they were at the ground at 7 am running through their training drills. (Clearly their Black team who the Nimble 9’s played the previous week had gone to school on our team and local scouting had tipped them off about the Magpies Thursday night training where the huddles was unleashed!). Editor note - It is interesting that they named their two teams ‘Black & Blue’!
It was a fantastic game of football played very hard and without doubt was the fastest, hardest, toughest, closest, mostest game played by the Nimble 9’s all season. The boys from the beach relished these conditions. The Magpies fast rotation of 25 players through all positions throughout the day had the opposition confused. The Magpies were determined throughout each quarter and really turned it on in the last to score several telling goals – it was if the boys had written the script! Particularly as the Magpie supporters attendance was the highest for the season. The coach was thrilled at the teams effort to concentrate and play their positions as well as they possibly could in the last quarter which left the Magpies 9’s singing the club song with gusto!
It was truly a team effort last Sunday and everyone contributed at the right time and in the right spirit. Every player should be congratulated on their part played in forming the Nimble 9’s team spirit.
Fantastic season Nimble 9’s – already looking forward to becoming the ‘Terrifyingly Terrific Tens’ in 2009.
Many thanks to our Manageress’s, Tammy & Emma who did an outstanding job throughout the season as did all the skills coaches – Peter, Neil, Neil, Derek and Mick.
Also a very big thank you to two of the Clubs retiring office bearers – Greg Evans (president) and Jane Eton (Registrar). Both have contributed enormous amounts of time to the club over the past few years to make the club a fun and well organised community based club. A big thanks from all the Nimble 9’s boys and parents.

Nimble 9’s vs Marist Black
Thoughts that this was to be a tough match were quickly shredded with the Magpie 9’s again firing from the first bounce down. After being warned at training on Thursday night that Marist are always very tough to be beat, particularly on their home turf, the Nimble 9’s were anxious during their three day wait before game time.
Captained and led confidently on to the very large ground by Felix King and Jack Annear, the team was quickly into gear. Even during the occasional foray into our backline, the Marist boys ran into the ‘defence wall’ ably led by Harry Jones who dominated the full back position. With team work, smart position play and excellent handball and kicking skills the Nimble 9’s played an impressive brand of football. Other consistent contributors were Oly Girdwood, Ben Edwards, Josh Pearson, Jack Annear, Riggles Dowland, Jake Patmore, Robbie Nielson and Bill Samual-Staude.
Bring on Marist Blue for our final game and we will be at full strength with all 25 players raring to play!

Cottesloe 13’s vs Sorrento Duncraig
It was a bird watchers dream on Sunday as the Magpies played the Hawks at Robin Park. An unexpected outbreak of bird flu however meant that we only had 17 players and the Hawks were down to 15. We agreed to lend them a player and match up at 16 a team and as Robbie Diamond found evidence with his trusty right boot of a Great Dane having enjoyed his morning walk in recent hours, Robbie was volunteered to start with the opposition. Under instructions to run around their forward line treading on his new team mates feet created havoc as planned! A couple of quick goals to the Magpies overshadowed numerous points to the Hawks at quarter time. Job done and boots now devoid of doo, Robbie returned to the fold and was active for the remainder of the game sniping at goals.
The second and third quarters were tight with Cottesloe not really getting adequate reward for the amount of possession held. I estimate we were switched on for about half the second quarter and two-thirds of the third. In the third the move of Andrew Ford to the forward line was almost as effective as that of his Father Cliff to goal umpire when Cliff clearly was signalling a goal before the ball had left his son’s foot on its banana trajectory.
The final quarter saw a focussed Magpie outfit run over the top of the Hawks to complete a somewhat wasteful 10:16 (couldn’t get Cliff to goal umpire at both ends!) to 3:9. We had some very good players on the day including Angus McMillan in the middle, Harrison Tyler in the backline, Lachie Andrew in the ruck and Tom Stewart working hard across half forward. Codie Girdwood and Campbell Sullivan were busy up forward as were Ethan Caldwell and James Watkins in defence.
We currently sit in 4th position and play the top side next Sunday at home.
Sunday 3rd August 2008
Nimble Nines
This weeks game following the Magpie gala day which was also the nines ‘Derby Day’ (v redbacks) threatened to be anticlimactic with the team potentially unable to continue their adrenalin pumping pursuit of AFL excellence. Then it rained at Thursdays training – the coach, not known for his wet weather skills (or desire to get wet), pulled the players off the track for some in-depth strategy discussion in the dry comfort of the change room.
Concerns were then heightened when two opposition teams turned up on Sunday to play the Cott nimble nines – had our impressive team play been reported back to the AFL and they were now scheduling 2 teams to conquer the Cott Nimble Nines? – surely not!
As play got under way against the Wembley Cats it soon became clear that cats were pussies as the Magpie magic was again on display. From Tom Viljoen’s impressive bustling runs from the centre to Josh Kings telling marks at full forward, the Magpies had winners in every position. The magpies played their positions perfectly, the hall mark of a very disciplined team. Ben Avery attacked the ball as if was an All Black rugby forward and was rewarded with several goals. Jake Patmore took some screamers and delivered the ball to his team mates. The team made Jack Annear very welcome for his first taste of Nimble Nine football. It was another impressive display by the Nimble nines which left the opposition speechless other some of the adults who have blamed their performance on the Umpire – which was unjust, inappropriate and very poor sportsmanship. The umpire was very good.
Sunday 27th July 2008 – Gala day
Nimble Nines
The Mapgie Nimble nines relished playing in front of a big home gala day crowd. The pressure of being undefeated isn’t affecting the nimble nines nor did the Sunday weather.
The redbacks known for their venom started well but were soon feeling the pressure of the teamwork that has become the trademark of the Magpie 9’s. The 9’s have become a real team with handball and fast playing on being a focus. (just need to work on our kicking technique). Ben Lee and Josh Pearson had great games both playing attacking football. Rigby Dowland had a good day out and seemed to be everywhere including in front of goals. Oly Girdwood and Ben Edwards put in another polished display of football. Jack Seah, Harry Jones and Ben Avery were also consistent performers throughout the game. The entire team should be very proud of their effort as they continue to play as a team.

Nimble Nines vs City beach
The last of our 4 week long road trip. Thinking the nimble nines would be tired after such a difficult draw was very quickly answered. A dynamic first quarter saw the magpies score 10 goals in a row! Abe Forward, sporting a sleek new hairdo, was inspirational as co-captain teaming up well with a disciplined Jake Patmore and all our running players. Our second quarter, with the wind was equally as impressive, particularly as all the Magpie players are working really hard to play their assigned position. Our other Co-captain, Jack Field consistently performed as did Oscar Henschke, Ben Edwards, Oly Girdwood, Ben Avery & Harry Jones. Congratulations to all the Magpie players who volunteered to play for City Beach for a quarter when you did you starred for the opposition! A low light for our team was the unfortunate and accidental clash of head between Frazer and Ben Edwards "leaving both very bruised but evidencing the attacking nature of our nimble team" nice shiner Frazer!

Cottesloe 13s
The Magpie 13’s were at home to second placed Subiaco on Sunday. Despite near perfect conditions both teams struggled to take advantage of the goal scoring conditions and in a low scoring match Cottesloe went down by a couple of goals in a tight match.
It was a rather unusual match and one that I think got away from us somewhat in that we enjoyed long periods of possession and for much of the game looked the superior team. Our backline again held up well led by Matt Kelly at centre half back and James Watkins at full back. Jacob Semmens, Ethan “Garfield” Caldwell, Will Brogan and Leon Song provided plenty of dash from the back and in particular when against the breeze our centreline and followers worked hard to get back and support. The centreline of Zach Langsford, Andrew Ford and Jack Prendiville were excellent all day as were followers Lachie Andrew and Harrison Tyler. Up forward we struggled to convert opportunities but Marcus Coli again worked hard across half forward.
We have two important winnable matches in the next few weeks ahead of the break so it is important that we focus our efforts there.
Nimble 9s
Continuing on our long road trip of games, the Magpies Nimble Nines ventured to the home of Dalkeith Nedlands. Ably led by co-captains Josh Allen and Bill Samual-Staude, the team was quick to get goals on the board. Relishing the benefits of a week’s bye (and thankful due to the awful weather the previous weekend) the magpies were fresh and hungry! The teams three Bens – Ben Lee, Ben Edwards & Ben Avery all had great games and confused the opposition. The Quentin Lynch of the team, Oly Girdwood, was impressive in his long leading, safe hands, and long accurate kicking. Harry Jones, Fraser Marzec, and Jack Field all played well with some great moments of team play. As the scoreboard was being worked on by the accurate magpies, our team remained very disciplined and everyone worked extremely well in maintaining their positions. Our umpire, Molly, apart from doing a superb job, commented that the Magpies looked very impressive, and played with more skill and with more teamwork than some of the 10’s teams that she has umpired – the players should feel very proud to hear comments like that!
Cottesloe 10s
Cottesloe 10s were in outstanding form against Swanbourne Tigers Navy at home on Sunday particularly in the first half. Led by Captain Griff Owen and Vice Captain Will Robertson the players were focused from the start and showed good discipline in implementing the game plan and strategies. Midfielders Josh Bennett, Jack Leaversuch, Will Goyder and Harrison Wroth delivered well to the forward line and provided a springboard for many of Swanbourne's attempted clearances from defence. Hugo Campbell and Griff Owen again provided goalscoring avenues and unselfish and creative handball ensured that the list of goalkickers was long.It was a great team effort all round with strong input from Sam Grice, Lachy Duke, Robbie Packer and Isabell Grist.
Goal umpire Dean Humphrey had plenty of opportunity to demonstrate his silky flag waving skills and Rob Nathan (and his dog) did a great job as relief runner.
Cottesloe 11s
The Magpie 11’s played away against Mosman Park on Sunday. In contrast to the soggy conditions of the previous week (home win vs. Wembley Downs), the boys played in superb but cool conditions at Mann Oval. The boys were fantastic and ran out winners by about 7 goals with the game played in great spirit. The boys used their sharp skills and dogged endeavour to beat a spirited and talented Mosman Park. Scotty and I are delighted with the skills, teamwork and intent displayed by our boys. Strong performances by Henry Williams, Charlie Grant, Kyle Newman and Peter Willis ensured that we are well on track to stay in the “virtual top 4”. Thanks to all our parents and supporters who helped make the game a sell-out.

Cottesloe 9s
Sunday 25 May saw the next Swanbourne 9’s venture to the home of the home of the magpies. Having dispatched Swanny Blue the week previously, Swanny Gold were clearly nervous. They arrived early and went through an extensive pregame warmup. All to no avail. The magpies were led ably by Jack Seah and Tom Warburton were quick off the mark with early scoring opportunities. Bill Samuel-Staude being rewarded for his aggressive and confident attacks on the ball, as was Tom Warburton. In the first half Oly Girdwood was another attacking player assisted by all of the players in the back line. Late in the second quarter and for most of the third quarter, the Cott team began to lose focus as the swell at Cott main began to rise – not an uncommon problem for Cott teams. Following advance warnings, a verbal spray from the coach, the first for most of the team, was all that was needed to get the 4th quarter back on track. Apart from the flooding techniques being adopted by the Swanny team, it was yet another great game of football. Other worthy contributors from Cott included Lucas Finn who used his pace and natural ability very well, Axel King , who has made his debut following an unlucky run of injury and who is now ‘finding his feet’, and Ben lee who was continually going under the packs to get the ball.
Cottesloe 13s
Another away game for the Cottesloe Magpies, this time at Luketina Oval in Wembley Downs, located at the centre of a maze which can take days to get in to or out of if you do not have good instructions or drop breadcrumbs on the way in!
With 3 teams including Cottesloe locked on 3 wins from 5 games and Wembley Downs just one win behind it was an important game for both sides. Marist and Subiaco sit above us and based on some pretty strange logic the authorities have now moved one of the two West Coast teams up from the 2nd Division allowing to bring their 5 wins to date with them. A loss would have seen us drop out of the 5. We have not!
The game was quite physical with players at times being offered little protection from the umpire. Although being up by a point at half time I thought we were flattered a little by that score and I was concerned about the uneven level of intensity amongst our players. Obviously there was something we needed in the half time water because the second half was quite a turnaround with a significantly raised level of intensity across the team. I thought players like Codie Girdwood (probably his best game for the Magpies), Leon Song, Lachie Andrew and Marcus Coli were the leaders in this regard and all made significant contributions, particularly via their physical approach. Despite playing with 17 men for 15 minutes in the 2nd half (unfortunately constructive umpiring advice was not accepted in that context)we took control of the game and outplayed the opposition. Other good players on the day included Zach Langsford, Andrew Ford, Jack Prendiville, Hugo Timms and Matt Kelly. Harry Watts and Karl Sarich chipped in with important goals in the 2nd half.
Sunday 18th May 2008.
Cottesloe U9s vs Swanbourne Navy U9
Cottesloe U9s have provided another skillful display of football, this time over Swanny. It was a close game until Cottesloe gained momentum and flew out in front. Cottesloe led for the entire game but dropped off early in the second quarter (the boys must have been checking out the rising swell at Isolators) when Swanny kicked the first two goals of the quarter but Cottesloe held out and used speed and strength to their advantage. Ben Edwards played a good game in the centre with thumping kicks and frightening speed. Oliver Girdwood kicked two early goals that gave Cottesloe the early lead. Cottesloe were challenged far more than the week before but still showed Swanny who’s boss.
Cottesloe 10s
The top of the table clash between Cottesloe 10s and Wembley was a hard fought high quality game providing greater spectator enjoyment than either of the Perth AFL teams are currently.
Cottesloe started strongly with unanswered goals from Griff Owen and Angus McConkey in the opening minutes. The balance of the game was a tightly contested struggle with the Cottesloe players demonstrating some amazing teamwork and skills under the leadership of Captain Josh Bennett and Vice Captain Robbie Packer. The Cottesloe defence was strong all day with Lachy Yeo in outstanding form at centre half back. The running brigade were in top form including Josh Bennett and Jack Leaversuch. Goal umpire John Currall got a real workout. Next week we travel to North Beach for a first ever encounter against them.
Cottesloe 13s
The Cottesloe 13’s continued their stretch of away games venturing to Newman College to take on top of the ladder Marist. What transpired was an excellent game of football played at a high skill level and with plenty of endeavor. Marist are a well drilled team and with the benefit of two teams worth of players to pick from before the season starts are able to put out on the field a very capable and very large side.
The first half was very competitive and the scores were pretty much level at half time. The Magpies were following the team plan of moving the ball quickly and trying to avoid anyone from Marist that looked like Dean Cox or Aaron Sandilands. A very hard working half back line of Christian Fini, Jacob Semmens and Harrison Tyler kept the ball going our way and on-ballers led by our best player on the day Andrew Ford, Johnny Clyder, Zach Langsford and big recruit Lachie Andrew in the ruck gave our forwards a good share of the ball. In contrast to last week our forwards fought hard to maintain possession.
The second half was tough with Marist upping the anti a level or two and a few of our players struggled to match that increased tempo. Fearing a repeat of last year’s 8 goal last quarter blitz from the Magpies, Marist remained very focused and went on to win reasonably comfortable against a competitive Magpies outfit.
The good news is there is still plenty of improvement to come for our team if the effort levels are there. Many players can improve their basic skills and others need to improve their fitness, mobility and/or concentration levels. The training track will be a great place to start that program this week. 3 from 5 so far – not bad!

Cottesloe 9's
Cottesloe U9s’ have started the season very well with another convincing win, this time over Claremont. The boys kicked the first 10 goals of the game and were well up at half time. Jake Patmore, co-captain) continually got the ball from the centre with help from his teammates. Rigby Dowland had a great game and kicked four goals as did Jake Patmore and all of the boys were great in there tackling and second efforts. Thomas Viljoen and Robbie Nielsen both tried hard at there tackling and kicking. Ben Edwards used his speed in the back-line as well as his kicking power to his advantage and Ben Avery constantly grabbed strong marks and booted long kicks. Cottesloe showed their dominance in the 1st and 3rd quarters when they scored 8 goals and 6 goals to nothing respectively. As well as a few stars performing extremely well, it was a great team effort and the team is full of very talented players. Well done to everyone.
By Codie Girdwood – the Nimble 9’s Football writer
Coaches comments:
The 9’s are clearly benefiting from their two coaches having played their entire careers at full forward – the Nimble9’s goal scoring prowess grows each week. Opposition backmen are now quaking in their boots.
Our most recent game saw the coming of age of more young footballers – worthy of note are:
Jack Field – with a scintillating pick and quick fire handball to clear one of the oppositions few forays into their forward line – play of the day.
Tom Warburton - with aggressive attacks on the ball and pace wore the shoe polish off his boots
Abe Forward – playing in many positions during the game ran and lead very well collecting many valuable possessions
Harry Jones – taking on the co-captain role, played a clever game in every position he was out – great leadership.
Cottesloe 11's
The 11’s returned all the way to Allen Park on Sunday morning to play our cross-North St rivals, the Swanny Tigers. The boys had last year’s final quarter runaway win by Swanbourne fresh in their minds. The first quarter was goal for goal and we held a slim margin at quarter time. The boys were in excellent form piecing together some well practised set plays. Throughout the next 3 quarters the boys played fantastic team football with at least 3 Magpies to every contest and second and third efforts the order of the day.
Scott and I were very proud of their efforts and the resulting 9 goal win was testament to their hard work, tight skills and tenacity. Great individual efforts by Pete Willis and Charlie Grant in another great team performance. The 11’s are having fun and on fire!

Cottesloe 13's
The Magpies 13’s took on the tourists from Sorrento Duncraig on Sunday at Cottesloe Oval before a near capacity crowd looking for ways to escape the usual list of chores dished out on Mother’s Day.
For a while I thought it was the official National Whingers Day as the moaning and groaning from the Sorrento Duncraig management reminded me so much of my days in England (or perhaps Rockingham).
Our boundary umpire was too short (to which the appropriate response could have been well you are too .....!) and to cap things off they nicked the whistle I lent their guy
There was no padding on the point posts (true but we just recommend that our players avoid collisions with them)
The boundary line was not properly marked (true but we scored some cones off the Eagles and put down a line to enable the party to get started)
Our water boy had no shoes (Labour Government and therefore not our electorate’s fault!)
The umpires were rubbish (no comment)
A typically fresh breeze off the ocean had an impact on strategy and seemed to have a significant impact on the quality of disposal for the day. I felt that the final score of 7.17 to 3.3 pretty much summed up the game. We had the majority of the ball but were a bit off our best in terms of using the ball effectively. The forward line tended to get congested which made it harder to find good targets. Overall though it was another good win making us 3 from 4 and there is no questioning the endeavour of most of our players.
Next week we face top team Marist and we will need to find some improvement across the playing list and play at our best to repeat some of our upsets against them in the past.
Best players for the week included Matt Kelly, Lachie Andrew, Angus McMillan, Andrew Ford, Harrison Tyler and Zach Langsford.

Cottesloe 10’s
Cottesloe 10s had a slow start to the 2008 season at Allen Park on Sunday. On such a glorious day, it is possible that minds were elsewhere. However, after the shock of being outscored by arch rivals Swanbourne Tigers Gold in the first quarter the team bounced back convincingly under the leadership of Captain Isabelle Grist and Vice Captain Sam Grice.
Tristan King and Denver Young were strong under pressure in defence in the first quarter and the old guard of Noah Dillon, Jack Leaversuch and Hugo Campbell fired to get the machine moving. Strong contributions came from James Borshoff, Jason Currall and William Robertson. Runner Terry Dillon made a great debut and goal umpire David Borshoff was in sizzling form. The signs are good for a repeat of 2007s success.
Cottesloe 11’s
The CJFC 11’s had a fantastic opener for the season against North Beach Red. The boys kicked with the benefit of the south east breeze and blitzed from the first bounce. It was an excellent display of skills, teamwork, intensity and strength. After a long pre-season, the boys are fit and showed off their down the line style of footy with many excellent passages of play with connecting handballs and marks being capped off with straight kicking. We finished the game with 14 goals 5 behinds (89) and the winning margin about the same. Well done boys, it was a pleasure to watch and coach.
Cottesloe 13’s
Sunday’s trip to North Beach saw the clash of two unbeaten teams in the top flight of the 13’s competition. Cottesloe had almost a full squad to choose from which was fantastic to see but a bit of a nightmare for the coaching staff balancing a need to settle the team with giving all players at least half a game. In future we will probably need to roster some players off in order to have a more manageable team list of 22 on match day.
For the spectators it was certainly worth the journey as the game lived up to expectations. The quality of the football was very good and scores were close all day. Unfortunately, despite a few good chances towards the end of the game, the Cottesloe Magpies were to go down by less than a goal at full time. The match saw a rather contrasting set of game plans with Cottesloe relying on quick movement of the ball through the hands of a number of players versus the opposition’s clear reliance on a lesser number of strong players.
Once again our backline was superb led by key position players Harrison Tyler and James Watkins with good support from Jacob Semmens. Our on-ballers worked tirelessly in particular Jack Prendiville, Hugo Timms, Angus McMillan and our ruckmen Lachie Andrew and Matt Kelly. Leon Song played an important role as a tagger and Marcus Coli worked hard at centre half forward.
Overall a good performance from which we can take confidence that we will be very competitive this year and also identify areas for improvement.

Cottesloe 13’s
Having been entered in to the A division competition, the Cottesloe 13’s packed early and left for the northern beaches late Saturday night to be at Carine’s home ground on time at 11:00am Sunday morning. Our season opener was against the Carine Panthers, not to be confused with the Carine Cougars (who we play at home next Sunday) or the Carine Jaguars who are in the B division. We were welcomed by Club coach Bob Cat and his wife Tiger Lily and let’s just say a leopard never changes its spots!
In what turned out to be a purrfect start to the season, the Magpies got away to a flier with our talls soaring to great heights in marking and ruck contests and the smalls swooping on any crumbs at great pace. The coaching staff had reinforced the need to develop our fast moving style of play reinforced by support for the ball carrier and for a first game the execution was outstanding. We dominated both the key defensive position, Harrison Tyler was outstanding at centre half back and the key forward position through Tom Stewart who controlled centre half forward and kicked 3 goals. In the middle Angus McMillan was tireless and Andrew Ford, Jack Prendiville and Nick Watkins showed pace and high levels of skill. A very strong first half saw the Magpies up by almost 10 goals at the major break and although we took the foot off the pedal a bit at the end we were at one stage up by about 13 goals and went on to win strongly.
There were a number of outstanding debuts for the Magpies 13’s including Zac Langsford, Lachie Andrew, Leon Song and Shaun Mitchell. There were plenty of goal kickers on the day but there were some to remember from Ed Prevost, taking the under not over route, big Robbie Diamond standing and delivering in the goal square, Matt Kelly from way out .......
Overall it was a fantastic exhibition of “run and stun” football by a team committed to playing to the designated game plan. Most pleasing was the even level of performance across the whole team with no weak links at all and several players playing well at both ends of the ground. With a few players unavailable our numbers were bolstered by some fabulous players from the 12’s who are most welcome to stay if they like – thanks Jack Dowland, Matthew Grice and Josh Evans.
Thanks also to our boundary umpire Gus Stewart who gave a faultless display on the perimeter!
